 The hardness of the water makes it actually taste good. On the other hand, however, having hard water is a disadvantage in washing or in keeping the kitchen or the bathroom clean. The hardness of the water is primarily caused by calcium and magnesium mono- or bicarbonates. These compounds react with the active components of detergents and bind their agents, so more washing powder is needed in hard water to reach the same cleaning potential. That is why the dosage of detergents is given in terms of the hardness of the water. The hardness causing carbonates also tend to crystallize and they are deposited as scale on anything: inside pipes, on faucets, in bathtubs, in boilers, on various parts of dish washers and washing machines - especially on the heater. Crystallized carbonates are bad heat conductors so more energy is used by a scale coated heater for heating up the water than in a normal case. In an extreme case the heater can even break down. It has been proven by tests and examinations that one millimeter thick scale layer causes 10% extra energy consumption. This is also an environmental issue but hard water obviously causes extra expenses for us.

 

What is the 'hardness' of the water?

 

Three quarters of the Earth's surface is covered by water which wanders in an eternal cycle and maintains the life on our planet. Rainwater is soft but as it is oozing into the soil it solves and withdraws different materials, also metal-ion salts. The concentration and composition of the solved content depends on the environment (i.e. the type of soil and rocks) the water has gone through. The hardness of the water is caused by practically the calcium and magnesium mono- or bicarbonates. Water can solve only a limited amount of these compounds. In an open place when the water evaporates the solved metal-ion salts are crystallizing out forming the well known scale. Inside the pipes, depositing starts because of the temperature changes of the water. Scale, therefore, appears on faucets, in bathtubs, in boilers, on various parts of dish washers and washing machines, in the kitchen sink and on every surface which has been in touch with water.

How can a device remove scale?

 

  The electric scale remover consists in two coils and an electric transformer. As the water runs through the first coil, high frequency ( 5000 Hz ) magnetic impulses destroy the original crystalloid structure of the carbonates so they cannot connect easily and they remain floating in the water. The second coil reverses the process and forces the floating carbonate particles to transform into a rhombohedral crystal system and this way so called aragonite type crystals are produced. Aragonite crystals are unable to make strong binds so they cannot produce solid depositions. They rather remain floating in the water. Transformed carbonates keep this structure for days so the water becomes effectively soft. The transformed particles gain positive charge and as they collide with deposited scale further along the pipe and they draw electrons from it. Chemical bindings in the deposited crystals become weaker and weaker and so the old scale layer is getting removed. The removal is gradual so the quality of the water is not lowered. During the treatment, also a small amount of hydrogen peroxide is produced which reacts with the metallic surface of the pipe and produces a thin magnetite coating. Magnetite has a useful property - it prevents the pipe from corrosion.

Installation of the device is simple, there is no need to call an expert.

 

The device can be installed on the water pipe anywhere after the water consumption meter. We suggest a location closer to the faucet. The scale remover can be installed on any kind of pipes ( copper, metal, plastic ). The pipe does not need to be cutted, the wires will be wound up on the outer side. You will find accessories for the installation in the packing. Approximately 30 cm of cleaned surface is needed on the pipe. The control unit can be mounted on the wall or it can even be hang up near the section of installation. One of the wires coming from the control unit should be tensly fixed on the pipe by an adhesive tape and then the rest of the wire must be tightly wound up. The end of the wire should be fixed again by some tape. The other wire must be fixed in a similar way some 12 cm from the first one, only the direction of winding must be the opposite.

 

Use the plastic sheaver in the package after this to fix both coils permanently. Finish the installation by connecting the control unit to the power outlet. The two red lights are constantly on and the yellow one is flashing during operation. The device can be left under power constantly; you never need to switch it off. In a block of flats or on pipes with the diameter 5/4 inch or wider, we suggest installing two scale removers next to each other with keeping the necessary distance between them and with paying attention to wind the cables in the correct directions.
